What is Mounjaro/Tirzepatide and Ozempic/Semaglutide – Wevogy/Semaglutide?
Ozempic/Semaglutide – Wegovy/Semaglutide and Mounjaro/Tirzepatide work more or less the same way — by mimicking the incretin hormones that your body naturally produces when you eat food.
Both are once-weekly injections. Mounjaro/Tirzepatide acts on both GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptor and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist that involves the control of blood sugar levels. GIP has been shown to decrease food intake while blunting the metabolic adaptive responses that usually occur with calorie restriction resulting in weight reductions, and when combined with GLP-1 receptor agonism, may result in greater effects on markers of metabolic dysregulation such as body weight, glucose and lipids.
What is the difference? Ozempic/Semaglutide – Wegovy/Semaglutide acts solely on GLP-1 receptors. Semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) in-office dosing schedule:
The starting dose of Semaglutide (Ozempic) is 0.25mg once weekly for 4 weeks. Then, your dose is increased every 4 weeks up to 2mg (max dose) once weekly, depending on how you respond to the medication.
The starting dose of Semaglutide (Wegovy) is 0.25mg once weekly for 4 weeks. Then, your dose is increased every 4 weeks up to 2.4mg (max dose) once weekly, depending on how you respond to the medication.
Mounjaro/Tirzeptide dosing schedule:
Escalated dosing for Mounajro/Tirzeptaide – Move up dose every 4 weeks
Starting dose x 4 weeks (ok to move up to next dose after 2 weeks if no side effects): 2.5mg (15 units)
After 4 weeks, move up to: 5mg (30 units)
After 4 weeks, move up to: 7.5mg (45 units)
You have the option of staying at your current dose or moving up. Many patients do very well on these lower dosages listed above and continue the same dose.
Higher dosing (move up only if needed, and after completing 4 weeks at prior dose): 10 mg (60 units), 12.5 mg (75 units), and Maximum dose – 15 mg (90 units).
Once you have reached your goal weight, we recommend a maintenance dose of 2.5mg (15 units) for at least 4 weeks. Some patients use a maintenance dose for up to 8 weeks or more.
